The successor to the AW-8 center speaker, now with a new, even better coaxial element!
The popular center speaker AW-8 is based around a 6.5 "coaxial element. The element is manufactured by Seas, but it is made to our specifications and differs significantly from other coaxial elements on the market. It has been developed using our long experience in coaxial elements. an oil-free metal dome tweeter has been used, the bass midrange cone is made of TPX plastic, and in a coaxial element the bass midrange cone forms a guide for the treble in the middle of the element. Making a crossover filter for a coaxial speaker is different from normal, and the shape of the response must be made different because the directivity of the treble behaves differently from that of a treble with a directional, but the filter is simple in structure.
The housing is of the TransFlex type, ie it combines a reflex housing and a transmission line. The case can be made of 15-18 millimeters of material, 18 milliliters is enough for the material thickness of the front panel. The case is drawn in the shape of a wedge, but it can also be made angular. The dimensions of the inner parts will change in that case, but the most important thing is to keep the sizes of the openings in the inner parts the same. The material used is, for example, plywood, mdf, solid wood, chipboard. The material of the interior parts that come in the TranFlex case is 8-10 millimeter plywood. The inner parts are glued to the housing, thus making the housing very strong and non-resonant. The housing is filled with polyester cotton, compacting it completely. The first chamber behind the bass, where the element itself is left without filling. It is a good idea to place the filter in the chamber behind the treble.
The speaker measurement results show that the responses are very similar to those of the AW-10X speaker. Bass playback doesn’t extend that far, due to the slightly smaller case, but the difference is virtually small. In the treble region, there is an unevenness characteristic of coaxial elements in the response measured directly from the front. Going sideways, the response evens out even for the treble. The power response is good. In listening, the coaxial center speaker showed its strength. The sound is precise and clear all the way to the listening position, no discoloration is audible. The AW-8 is ideal as a center speaker with the AW-36X and AW-10X models. We also tried many other models with it that don’t have a specially designed center speaker. The AW-8X worked as a fairly good compromise with most speakers. Although the sound is not quite the same, it does have the advantages of a coaxial speaker, a dot, and a wide listening area.
NOTE! The terminal of the series has changed from the one in the drawings! Check the dimensions!
