It is a good idea to think carefully about the placement of the speakers in the room, how big the room is and what the budget is. As a rule of thumb, bigger speakers always fit in a bigger room, but that’s by no means clear. Everything related to hi-fi is always dependent on preferences and since it is a hobby, it is not worth limiting oneself and one's hobby with invented rules. The most important thing is to find a pleasant experience that you can enjoy.
Passive or active speakers?
Due to the huge popularity of Genelecie in Finland, there is also a great demand for active speakers . In practice, the difference is simply a different way to implement speaker power gain. Active ones have a built-in amplifier, while passive amplifiers are a separate device, often with the same features or more than just an active speaker. Often, active speakers also come with some kind of digital signal processor (DSP) that corrects, for example, room-induced distortions or can programmatically modify the sound as desired. Of course, this can also be done with either an external room corrector or a built-in amplifier.
Things can be complicated or poorly implemented in either option. It doesn’t make a speaker better or worse if it’s active, but it’s important to take care of the entire audio chain from the audio source to the speaker. Choose devices and speakers that meet your own preferences, but also your own needs, for example in terms of connections.
