When we discuss hi-fi audio equipment, a lot of attention is often paid to high-end amplifiers, speakers and players. While these are critical components, there is one factor that often gets overlooked: speaker cable or speaker wire. The speaker cable is an equally important part of the whole. It's like a circulatory system that delivers the signal from the sound source to the speakers.

The best speaker cables won't make your system sound better than it actually is, but they can and should ensure that every drop of performance goes from the amplifier to the speakers.

Conversely, bad speaker cable can definitely make your system sound a lot worse than it actually is, so it's definitely worth budgeting for decent cabling when buying or upgrading your hi-fi system. If you don't, you could end up with cheap, poorly made cables that waste the talent of your expensive rig. (The same goes for the cables connecting your electronic devices, so make sure you invest in decent audio cables too.)

Remember to budget for the length of speaker wire you need (and the number of speakers, if applicable surround system) and remember that the cable prices we offer usually do not include the banana plugs shown in the pictures - you can specify the lengths and connections during the purchase process.

Banana plugs make connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting easier, but they do not improve sound quality. In fact, many people find bare wires better sonically, so choose what works for your system.

Whatever your opinion on the matter, there is no denying that cables matter.

Speaker cable materials and uses

A good speaker cable is made of several different materials. The core of the cable often has copper, and some models in the higher price range also have silver mixed in to improve conductivity. Copper is a very popular material due to its high electrical conductivity and low cost. Silver conducts electricity even better than copper, but its price is higher.

The coating of the speaker cable also matters. The coating protects the cable core and helps maintain its functionality for years. High-quality cables use, for example, rubber or PVC.

It is also important to know that not all speaker cables have the same purpose. In theater use, the speaker cable must be able to transmit sound in a balanced manner from several different sources, while in listening to music, the speaker cable's task is to produce the best possible sound quality for two-channel stereo sound.

However, many hifi fans have noticed that the appearance of the speaker cable can make a difference. And not only in terms of aesthetics, but also in terms of practicality. White speaker cable is a particularly popular choice in many modern homes. The white speaker cable blends effortlessly into the white interior and does not become an eye-catching element in the room.

How to choose the right speaker cables for you?

If you are getting new speaker cables for your system, a starting point might be to contact the speaker manufacturer and ask if they recommend a specific brand or model of cable. After all, engineers have spent hours experimenting during the development process, and you may gain valuable information that may make finding the right cable easier.

As a general rule of thumb, we recommend allocating 10-15 percent of the total system costs to all cables. In the case of a hi-fi setup, you'll need analog interconnects, speaker cables, and possibly digital optical or coaxial cables, depending on the sources you're using. So you want to reserve part of the budget for suitable speaker cables.

If you currently have excellent entry-level hardware, you may not feel the need to spend a fortune on cables, and that's perfectly fine. However, you may find that trying new cables is an easy and effective way to improve the sound of your system without breaking the bank.

On the other hand, if you own high-end hardware, we recommend looking for comparably priced cables to get the best possible performance out of your system.
